The 1 Power Everyone Seems to Have

The one thing we all have in common is the power of observation. Some of the greatest moments in coaching sessions are when I honor that power in the client and then work with them to turn it into an advantage.

Leaders

Often when I talk with leaders they tell me what they see and then tell me the decision they will act on. By recognizing that what they see has value, we can gather that additional information and turn it into a more informed decision.

For example, if a leader tells me that they notice how all their colleagues are jockeying for positions with the new boss, we can consider that as context for deciding what happens next.

SPOILER ALERT: When we follow their instincts it always works out because they feel better about their approach.

Job Seekers

Nearly every conversation with a job seeker has them telling me it’s a tough job market. They don’t have to tell me that of course, but it is a sign of what they see. When we dig deeper I find that every avenue that seems to give an advantage is oversaturated.

By leaning into the power of that observation we can then devise a plan that lays out how they want to proceed, especially when it comes to networking.

Coaches

The key moment when I was able to achieve the next level of coaching was when I realized I could share my observations as a coach and then ask a question. The most impactful moments in a session are when I share what I notice and I help clients connect the dots. All the dots I have noticed point to observation being the one superpower we could all leverage.

SPOILER ALERT: When we share our observations it always works out because we can validate our understanding or gather key information.
