Scared or Sacred

Scared and sacred use the same letters. That alone is a lesson in reframing our experiences. I did not realize this when I named my company – Sacred Time – but I did eventually see the connection to my youth.

Scared

When I was at a crossroads in my youth, the Summer after my junior year of high school, I was asked to step in as an alternate and attend Girl State in California. I don’t know if I really knew what it was but I said yes and got to go. Early on in the experience I sketched the word Scared on the front cover of my notebook. I have no idea why. The best I can figure it in looking back was that I was alone in an auditorium full of people and no contact with the outside world.

The friendships I forged and the experience I had moving about campus discussing ideas single-handedly had me deciding to attend a university after graduation instead of a vocational school.

Sacred

After I made a major career move from being an Emmy-award winning video editor to traveling the US and Australia as a software trainer, I tried to figure out how else to restart my career when I had no idea what was next. I became a graduate student studying ecopsychology which allowed me to explore the topic of sacred sites and unpack my experiences at Uluru.

Looking back at this now sacred, as I would define it, is that which connects us to something greater. That could be the Divine, Source, Ourselves and all that we could be. Sacred Time as a company was founded on the premise that if we set aside time for ourselves and hold that sacred (as we often do for others), we would be far better off in the long run.

Scared or Sacred

In addition to seeing this as a way to reframe our experiences I am seeing this as the following insights:

  • We can be scared when we do something new and still do it afraid
  • We can decide what is sacred and honor it with all that we are

In my own story, these are the moments that changed the trajectory of my career.

What can you do to shift from being scared at a career crossroads to seeing it as a sacred opportunity?
